PixelLab generates pixel art with AI and then does the hard part — animating characters, rotating them, wiring it into a pipeline through an API. Spritory does not generate anything and does not build characters today. It compiles props, scenery, items and effects from tagged shapes through a style profile, for one payment instead of a monthly allowance. These two tools overlap less than the category name suggests.

The honest take on PixelLab
PixelLab has gone after the genuinely hard problem in AI pixel art. Anyone can generate a static sprite; keeping a character coherent across an animation and a rotation is the part that usually falls apart, and that is where their work has gone. If characters are your bottleneck, this comparison is short: Spritory is not the tool for that today. Come back when your bottleneck is the other ninety per cent of the screen.

Can Spritory animate a character like PixelLab does?
Not today, and this is the clearest gap between the two. PixelLab is built around generating a character and then animating and rotating it. Spritory has no humanoid support and no frame-by-frame sprite timeline yet. The animation it ships is the VFX Forge, which compiles particle effects — fire, explosions, slashes, sparkles — into sheets with frame metadata.
Which is cheaper over a year?
It depends entirely on volume, but the shapes of the two bills are different. PixelLab charges monthly or per generation, so the cost keeps pace with how much you make. Spritory is $15 once during early access ($20 after) and then nothing, because the renderer runs in your browser rather than on someone's GPU. A hobby project that makes art in bursts usually favours the one-time payment; a studio needing constant character output usually does not.
I need characters and props. What do I actually do?
Use both, and connect them with style extraction. Generate your characters in PixelLab, then drop a PNG of them into Spritory's style extraction, which reads the palette, ramps, outline ink and dither and hands back a style profile. Every prop, crate, tree and explosion you compile afterwards will sit in the same palette as the characters you generated.
Does Spritory have an API?
Not a public one. If your pipeline needs programmatic asset generation, PixelLab's API is the better fit today. Spritory is an editor you sit in front of, and its exports (sheet plus atlas JSON, Godot .tres, Unity .meta) are designed to drop into an engine rather than into a build script.
Why would consistency beat flexibility?
Because a game is a set, not a collection. Players do not notice a great crate; they notice one crate that is lit from a different angle than the other twenty-nine. A generator gives you range and asks you to enforce consistency. A compiler gives you consistency and asks you to work within a shape vocabulary. Which trade is right depends on whether your problem is variety or coherence.
